Canon EOS R6 live-action review
The latest mirrorless interchangeable lens camera achieves an overwhelming perfection that makes you feel the difference in dimensions.
It’s been a month since the latest EOS R5, the latest mirrorless single-lens camera, prevailed worldwide. Canon has launched a new product, the Canon EOS R6, to show its presence in the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera market.
The EOS R6 was announced at the same time as the EOS R5, but it is not an exaggeration to say that it is an important model that tells the story of Canon’s whereabouts.
Shotecamera PRESS has already developed a live-action review of the EOS R5, but this time, we will thoroughly introduce its appeal using the EOS R6.
A new full-size mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera created by Canon
The EOS R6 introduced this time is a mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera equipped with a full-size sensor newly released by Canon.
Since October 2018, Canon has been rolling out the ” EOS R Series, ” which has adopted a new mount standard. This EOS R6 is also the latest model in the EOS R Series.
The EOS R6, the latest model to watch along with the EOS R5 announced simultaneously, is a mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera that has achieved overwhelming performance that overturns conventional wisdom, as will be introduced in detail later.
Released as a lower priced version than EOS R5
Many of you may wonder how it differs from the Canon EOS R5 that was announced simultaneously.
I will make a detailed comparison later, but the EOS R6 is sold at a lower price than the EOS R5, and the EOS R5 is easy to reach even for users who have an impression that it is too expensive. It has become.
There is no big change in basic performance; the biggest difference is the number of pixels and movie-shooting performance.
Appearance review
First, I will introduce appearance and functionality, focusing on size, weight, and design. Perhaps some people considering purchasing the EOS R6 are also considering switching from a single-lens reflex camera, so I will introduce the differences between the two models.
Significantly smaller and lighter than a single-lens reflex camera
The EOS R6 uses a mirrorless single-lens reflex camera, which eliminates the mirror structure from the single-lens reflex camera and makes it smaller and lighter.
Suppose we develop a single-lens reflex camera with the same performance as the EOS R6. In that case, we can predict that it will be larger than the EOS R6, and the benefits of being a mirrorless single-lens camera can also be felt regarding portability.
Looking at the entire mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, the EOS R6 does not have exceptional portability. Still, for those who have been mainly using single-lens reflex cameras, you can feel the advantage in portability. Probably.
Operability closer to the style of a single-lens reflex camera than the EOS R5
Canon released a model called EOS R5 before the EOS R6 was introduced. In the EOS R5, a new mode dial and a small liquid crystal monitor were installed mainly in the operating system on the upper part of the camera like the EOS R. Still, unlike those styles, the EOS R6 is close to a conventional single-lens reflex camera. Equipped with a dial-type mode dial, it can be used by single-lens reflex users without any discomfort.
SD card x 2 is used as the recording medium.
The EOS R6 uses a double slot to insert two SD cards as a recording medium. You can also make settings such as recording two images simultaneously or using two images in sequence, and setting up a two-image system improves the reliability of data storage during shooting.
Since the conventional EOS R has a single slot with only one SD card, the reliability of becoming a double slot, which can be used even in the professional field, is one of the big points.
Since it is difficult to store data 100% securely as long as you are using an SD card, simultaneous recording with a double slot is personally recommended to improve safety as much as possible.
Performance review
To get closer to the core of the EOS R6, we will introduce the shooting performance. I have already experienced the overwhelming performance of the EOS R5, but I was also shocked by the EOS R6.
We will look closer at the attractive aspects of shooting performance, along with examples.
The standard number of pixels is about 2010 million
The EOS R6 has about 2010 million pixels, which is standard and sufficient for a single-lens camera.
Although it is not a high pixel count, it is not a small number of pixels, and it is a practical specification that allows you to fully experience the camera’s performance.
In the EOS R series, a function can crop to APS-C size (1.6 times), but the number of pixels is further reduced when the crop function is used only, so the number of pixels is a drawback only in this case. It will be.
Excellent high-sensitivity resistance attracted by the highest regular ISO 102400
There is also the benefit of not having too many pixels. The EOS R6 has the latest video engine, ” DIGIC X, “greatly improving the depiction ability during high-sensitivity shooting.
As a result, the highest ISO sensitivity for regular use is ISO 102400, and the numerical values of ISO 3200 to 12800 have a chance to be used practically. There is less noise than the conventional model, and the detail expression that does not seem to be high sensitivity is achieved. It has been realized.
Among the single-lens cameras I have tried so far, it is the best one released in recent years. High sensitivity resistance is one of the criteria for camera performance. Still, the EOS R6 introduced this time boasts outstanding performance among single-lens cameras so far. Increase.
Noise generation in high-sensitivity shooting mainly occurs in dark areas where “black” is conspicuous. Still, with the Canon EOS R6, noise is not noticeable even when the ISO sensitivity is set high.
I have reviewed various full-frame SLR cameras but have never been so impressed with high-sensitivity shooting.
To be honest, the EOS R6 can be introduced only for this high-sensitivity shooting, and it demonstrates overwhelming ability in this area.
Night shooting combined with 8.0 steps of in-body image stabilization
The Canon EOS R6 boasts excellent high-sensitivity resistance, but like the EOS R5, the newly installed in-body image stabilization mechanism makes it even more powerful when shooting at night.
The EOS R6’s in-body image stabilization, which achieves 8.0 stops of image stabilization, does not require a significant increase in sensitivity. It is possible to shoot without blur even at low shutter speeds, so it is possible to shoot at night. You will be able to do it more aggressively than ever before.
High-speed continuous shooting performance of up to about 12 frames.
Although it is effective for continuous shooting of moving subjects, the EOS R6 achieves a performance of approximately 12 frames per second even when the AI servo that follows AF is specified.
Furthermore, an electronic shutter achieves high-speed continuous shooting of about 20 frames per second, so there is almost no worry of missing a decisive moment.
With the EOS R, there was a demerit that the continuous shooting speed decreased by using the AI servo, but with the EOS R5 / R6, by improving that area as well, it became closer to the ideal.
SLR users may have a hard time getting used to it
I tried high-speed continuous shooting performance for a moving subject this time by specifying. The AI servo, but since the image in the viewfinder freezes every time the shutter is released. It takes some getting used to compose the subject. I felt that.
The optical viewfinder only temporarily darkens the inside of the viewfinder but with the EOS R6’s electronic viewfinder. The viewfinder looks frame-by-frame while the shutter is released, so the subject’s movement during continuous shooting. To be honest, it’s hard to grasp.
Even when I was shooting with a single-lens reflex camera, there were some scenes where I couldn’t fit the subject in the correct frame due to the difference in the viewfinder’s appearance, even if the scene did not go beyond the composition.
